BETA THETA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

The Beta Theta Boule’ created a 501 (3) C foundation in 2006 and now it awards eight scholarships a year to Greater Knoxville Area minority high school graduates to attend accredited colleges in the United States.

Beta Theta Boule’ Foundation awardS eight scholarships to high potential students in the greater Knoxville area. The Beta Theta Boule’ Foundation is a newly formed nonprofit corporation created exclusively for educational and charitable purposes and seeks to annually award merit-based scholarships to promising African-American and other students of color from area high schools. The Beta Theta Boule’ Foundation is a 501(C)(3) organization and is affiliated with the Beta Theta Boule’, a local chapter of the national Sigma Pi Phi fraternity.

The criteria to receive a Beta Theta Boule’ Foundation scholarship includes academic performance; leadership and extracurricular activities; community involvement; and potential to succeed beyond college. The recipients of the 2011 scholarship awards will receive $1,000.00 each prior to the beginning of the fall college semester. The recipients of the 2010 Beta Theta Foundation scholarships were: Ms. Taylor Cravanas, Bearden High; Mr. Korrie Barnes, Hardin Valley High; Ms. Sara Hussein, Karns High; Ms. Christen Donald, Oak Ridge High; and Mr. Kristopher Tucker, Austin East High.

“The selection of scholarship awardees was particularly difficult because the applicant pool included students with high academic achievement and an extraordinary amount of character” said Dr. John Turner, former chair of the Beta Theta Boule’ Foundation Scholarship Committee. More than 40 students applied for the scholarships and Turner stated “the college choices of the awardees ranged from the University of Memphis to MIT”. Other members of the Beta Thea Boule’ Foundation Scholarship Committee are: Mr. Don Hickman, Mr. Lonnie Jones, Jr., Dr. Lonnie McIntyre, Mr. David Smith, Dr. Sheadrick A. Tillman IV, and Mr.  Dennis R. Upton.
